Plumbing in Fitzroy
Fitzroy is one of Melbourne's oldest suburbs, and its plumbing shows it. Much of the housing is Victorian-era terraces and workers' cottages built well before modern plumbing standards, with later extensions layered on top. It is common to open a Fitzroy wall and find three generations of pipework: original earthenware drainage, mid-century galvanised steel and modern copper or PEX, all joined together and all ageing at different rates.
Galvanised supply pipe is the recurring culprit here. It corrodes from the inside, so the first symptom is usually falling pressure or discoloured water rather than a visible leak. Original clay sewer drains are the other one: the joints are porous by modern standards and the suburb's established street trees find them.
